Problems with iOS Apps/Web clips being unruly with your Home Screen Layout?

I’m currently working on a large iOS workstream, which has a lot of neat bells and whistles going on. One such thing, which isn’t exactly groundbreaking, is a customised Home Screen Layout.

This has caused me, and the internet it seems, a bit of a headache… We have a lot of Web clips on this home screen, and it turns out, that depending on the configuration of these Web clips, the home screen will either play nicely and conform to your customised home screen demands or cause you a problem.

I’ve found, through trial and error, that if you toggle any of the options shown below, that your Web clip will ignore your customised layout, and simply drop in place at the next available placeholder.

So, ignore the;

  • Require a managed browser to open this link
  • Full screen
  • Ignore manifest scope
  • Precomposed

options, and your icon should obey your commands just fine.

It’s not clear why this is happening, or if it’s by design or simply a bug, but… it worked for me.

    Hi James. Some interesting reading on your site. Bookmarked! Two thoughts come to mind:

    Have you found a way to run fullscreen webclips using Edge? Seems to only work for Safari.
    Also I found recently that calling com.apple.mobilesafari for a fullscreen webclip no longer works. The app just doesn’t do anything. However if you call com.apple.webapp it works. Not sure if it’s a planned change or a bug, but FYA.

      Morning James, I haven’t touched Web clips since this post, and there will definitely have been one, if not two major iOS updates. So to be honest, I’m unsure about the query with Edge – unless tried & tested.

      com.apple.mobilesafari / com.apple.webapp have both been present for a while, so it’s plausible Apple have changed something here also. Maybe the use of com.apple.webapp simply launches the default “browser” as opposed to specifically Safari (com.apple.mobilesafari) or something?
